History
I started running in January of 2004 to get in shape. I had gained too much weight and felt terrible. I was able to run my first 5K 3 months later. 2 years later and 50 lbs lighter, I have continued to push for greater goals and have run 5 marathons and I am training for an Iron distance triathlon now. Everyday I wake up with a positive attitude towards life, training and my future.
Marathons Completed

New Week
January 29, 2008
Well it's been a great start to the week. Last night at my spin class I had 17 students. Hell I had to turn away 3-4 people because there were not enough bikes for everyone.
Everyone seemed to have fun while sweating and burning off calories. Spin classes are great for getting the exercise you need without the harmful effects of running and jogging. There is not as much pounding on the joints.

So what of the training schedule. So far this week I got in some good strength training. Working my arms and shoulders yesterday. I felt that I was able to push harder than usual. It actually felt quite good. I have not had that kind of muscle aching for a long time. I was able to take my biceps and triceps to failure.

I also got in about 1400 yards in swimming. I worked on technique and drills for most of the session. I find myself pulling harder and longer with each session. I have been working harder at bilateral breathing than I have in the past. I think it would be a good thing to have a great handle on when I do the ironman distance race.

So tomorrow I will be back at the gym. the weather has not been cooperating for much outdoor running in the mornings. the weather has been very cold with wind chills in the single digits. I will be glad when the weather warms up. I want to get the bike back on the road. The rubber back blacktop. I am itching for a nice bike ride. Nice long bike ride to shake out the cobwebs. So for now, I am going to continue to train as best I can. continue to work on my training schedule, and continue to pray for better weather. CIAO!

Here We Go!
January 24, 2008

Well it's been a while but here I am again. Blogging my way into 2008 at last. I do miss these journal entries. Where have I been? Hmmm let's look into that.

Since my last entry life has taken it's twists and turns. From my recent divorce to trying to get my house ready for sale, I have been one busy guy. Life has been keeping me really busy and I am not sure half the time if I am coming or going. I have been working hard at my full time job while trying to change my career direction and move into fitness training. I do find enjoyment in my full time job as a nurse but feel that after 15 years I am starting to get weary.

Since the first of the year I have been teaching a Spin Class 2 nights a week at the local gym. I am getting a lot of enjoyment out of the classes as well as a lot of goo training for myself. Hell, if your going to train - you might as well take 15 people with you down that road. I have been studying for my Certification as a Personal Trainer and hope to have that done sometime next month. I have already had a couple referrals and will be starting in on that soon.

My training is still progressing. Since the first I have started ramping up my mileage, strength and swim speed. I have been concentration on form more than speed during this off season. The spin bikes and my home trainer have been everything for my cycling. The roads are a mess out here until after the weather warms up a bit. So taking out my bike is not an option currently. My running is getting faster - I will be adding mileage in the coming month to build up to 13-15 mile long runs again. I have been doing 1 day of strength training and several days of core conditioning. Right now I am doing around 8-10 hours of exercise per week.

My training plan for my Ironman is in the works. I have 12 weeks finished so far. I still don't have a coach, why? Well frankly it is because I have no way to afford one. Even the cheapest of coaches go for 100.00 per month. Until I sell my house that is not going to happen. So I am using the same training guide that I used for my Half-Ironman but turned to the chapter on Full Ironman. Good Luck - Right!

So from here on - blogging will be more consistent. There are a lot of other changes in my life - but that is for another day. Tomorrow I'm back in the pool. Back and forth, one wall to the other. Constant rhythm, smooth and regular. If only life was that easy. CIAO!
